TOURNAMENT MECHANICS

Team Composition

This is a team competition. Teams are comprised of 2 men and 2 women and may join one of the following team categories:

• Novice (DUPR 2.5-2.99)

• Intermediate (DUPR 3.00-3.99)

• Advanced (DUPR 4.0-4.75)

Determining Skill Rating

Ratings are based on actual or estimated DUPR and/or peer rating. A tournament committee composed of seasoned pickleball coaches and referees will endeavor to validate declared skill levels. In case further verification of skill level is needed, the committee may request additional validation from the participants or their club.

Tournament committee reserves the right to transfer a team to a higher team category if deemed appropriate. If a team is to be transferred they will be allowed a full refund if they do not wish to compete in the higher category.

All player ratings in the team are considered for the team category leveling. For example, a team composed of three DUPR 3.0 level players and one DUPR 4.5 level player will have to play in the Advanced Category. It is recommended that a team has players with relatively equal skill levels to avoid issues.

Players are required to show DUPR profiles if they have one. Otherwise, the organizer will make a profile for them during the tournament and the players are strongly recommended to activate the account during or after the tournament.

If a player has medaled in a past tournament, they are automatically disqualified from joining as a Novice. If a player has a varsity collegiate racket sports background (tennis, badminton or table tennis), he/she is strongly recommended to join at least in the Intermediate Category. If a player is unaware of his/her rating, he/she can be peer-rated by someone with an official DUPR rating. For the general DUPR rating guidelines, check the chart below.

Tournament Format

The event will be played in a single round-robin format with 2 groups per division.

Each group will be composed of 4 teams. Teams will play each other in a 5-game format defined as a Match:

• Men’s Doubles

• Women’s Doubles

• Mixed Doubles A

• Mixed Doubles B

• Best Mixed Doubles Team

Each pair will play one game to 11pts (standard scoring) with a 15 minute time limit. All 5 games will be played regardless of score.

Scoring System

Round Robin games will be played as standard side out scoring to 11pts. The serving team switches sides when they score. A lead of 2pts to win.

The elimination games will follow a strict time limit of 15 minutes. The game will be stopped once 15 minutes have elapsed. The team with the lead when the time runs out will be declared the winner being brought up to 11 points or whatever point total gives them a 2-point lead over the opponent.

Semis and Finals will be side out scoring to 11pts (no time limit). Lead of 2 points to win.

Match Schedules

Match Schedules will be posted beforehand and players are to be responsible for being at their court when their game is about to start.

If a prior match ends early for whatever reason, the next teams are expected to be there ready to start their games.

Defaults and Forfeits

A 2-minute grace period will be given to players to report to the court. The countdown shall be started by the referee and announced to the players present on the court.

The score in the event of a default shall be 6-0 in favor of the present player or pair. If a player sustains an injury during the game that prevents them from continuing, and the team does not have an alternate of the same gender present, the match shall be considered forfeited by the injured player. The score at the time of stoppage shall be the final score if the leading player/pair is ahead. Otherwise, additional points will be awarded to the winning player/pair to ensure a final margin of one point over the defaulting side.

Semi-Finals Qualification and Tiebreakers

For the elimination round, the total matches won will decide who advance to the semifinals. The two teams with the most number of matches won in their group will advance to the Semis.

In case two teams won the same number of matches, a tiebreaker will be decided by the number of games won.

In case two teams have the same total games won, a tiebreaker will be decided by point differential.

In the rare case two teams have the same total games won and same total point differential, the advancing team will be decided by the teams head to head result.

Semi-Finals and Finals

The first team to score 3 games won over the other will be deemed winners. The match will be concluded as soon as one team reaches 3 points.

If the match is tied at 2 games, a deciding 5th game will take place with teams fielding their best mixed doubles pair.

Match Start

Before the start of the match, the referee will perform a coin toss or something similar. The team who wins the call can either decide to serve first or to choose the courtside.

Timeouts

Each team is allowed one (1) 60-second timeout per game.

Water or towel breaks are permitted without using a timeout, provided they do not disrupt the flow of the game. If the game is disrupted, the referee may charge the delaying team's timeout. If the team has already used all its timeouts, the referee may issue a technical warning.

Line Calls

Players on the pickleball court should be responsible for most line calls. The referee will be responsible for any service foot faults, Non-Volley Zone foot faults, short serves, or other Non-Volley Zone rules.

Should the opposing player/team want to challenge the line call of the player/team who made the call, they may ask the referee for his/her call, only if he/she saw the ball.

If a player disagrees with a referee’s ruling, then that player may appeal the ruling to the head referee or tournament director.

However, if the referee’s ruling is correct, then the appealing player/team will lose a time-out and be given a technical warning. If the appealing player/team does not have any time-outs remaining, then the appealing player/team will be given a technical foul. If the referee’s ruling is incorrect, then the players will replay the point and there will be no penalty.

Official Scores

The winning side shall sign the scorecard.

Any discrepancies should be addressed to the Tournament Director, who shall make the final decision.

All scores will be uploaded to DUPR on the players profiles and will affect players’ ratings.

Medical Concerns

In case of a medical emergency on the court, the referee will call a medical time out which lasts for 15 minutes starting from the moment the medic arrives at the court.

If a player cannot continue, the team can substitute another player of the same gender. If the team has no substitute available, the opposing team will be given a winning score at 11 points or 2 points above the other team depending on which is relevant.
