Dear Doc, my muscles ached after an hour of exercise. Is this normal?

Contrary to what you’ve heard (‘No pain, no gain’), pain is not a desired effect during sports or exercise. Pain is your body’s way of telling you something is wrong. Although it is okay to try to push your body to its limits, it should never be to the point of breaking it down. Always be aware of your level of conditioning. If you are a newcomer to exercise, take it slow. Get some advice from trainers and sports doctors. Have a good idea of what stretching, warming up and cooling down is all about. Combine resistance training with cardiovascular programs.
All beginners will feel muscle pain a day or two after exercise. This is called delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS). Pain while exercising is more alarming and not normal. If you feel pain, stop. If it goes away, it’s nothing to worry about. If it persists, go see a doctor.
